„It’s been quite a while since I’ve been doing traditional arithmetic. So I bought a SHL practice test and I am absolutely thrilled with the results. In the first SHL test, I had 10 – 12 correct answers, but after only two more tests, I was able to increase my score to 16 – 18 correct answers! Refreshing old knowledge is important.“

SHL Test – Questions and Answers

The SHL test is a challenge – for some more, for others less!

The fact is, with proper preparation you will become familiar with the strategies and routines of the test questions and the test will gradually become easier and easier for you.

In general, however, the SHL test is considered one of the more challenging skills tests used to find candidates at large companies. The logical-inductive test part is particularly challenging for most participants, as most have already dealt with mathematical calculation tasks and verbal factual comprehension tasks in everyday life, but not with logical thinking tasks. But this also varies from person to person.

Absolutely, and up to 80%. You will notice a particularly strong improvement in the areas that are most difficult for you at the beginning. Imagine you are training for a marathon. As an inexperienced runner, 5km is already very difficult for you, but the more you train, the easier it becomes for you. Even if you are skilled, extensive preparation, will make it even easier for you.

So training is always the right way to get your best possible personal test result – whether you are a beginner or an experienced runner who has already dealt with logical, numerical and verbal skill tasks.

The SHL test is structured in such a way that you have to answer questions on numerical, verbal and logical tasks. The questions are basically structured in a similar way. You get several answer possibilities to one question. So all tasks are multiple choice. Thus our tip is: If you have no idea, then guess!  There are no deductions for wrongly answered questions and you have a certain chance to have given the right answer.

To avoid getting into the dilemma of guessing answers in the first place, it is best to prepare extensively for your SHL test. Familiarize yourself with the task structure and solution methods and make sure that you have looked at tasks from all three areas (numerical, logical and verbal) when you take the combined SHL test. If you have your test in only one or two sub-areas, you will of course need to focus only on those.

When you prepare for your SHL test with Test The Talent, you get an overview at the end of each practice test with the questions you got right and the ones you got wrong. When you take a real SHL test, things look a little different. Your potential future employer, will receive a test report that shows with percentages how well you performed. Here 70%-90%- performance is above average, 30-69% is average, 90-100 is well above average. Anything below 30% indicates rather weak skills. There is no minimum score you have to achieve to pass the test. The test serves more as a comparison of you and other candidates. Thus, you have the best chance of succeeding in the application process if you score as high as possible, but at least 70%.

Yes you can!

Should you? – NO.

It is definitely possible to cheat on SHL tests. Either by hiring someone to take the test or by using one of the many websites that offer paid services in this area. SHL test can seem challenging, especially if they decide your future career. Still, skills tests are offered by companies for a reason: They are used as an indicator of how quickly potential candidates can familiarize themselves with new subject matter and how well they can proceed systematically. They also give a first impression of how the candidate handles the combination of time pressure and complex tasks. Generally, candidates who do particularly well on such tests are considered to be more efficient and creative. Cheating on SHL tests in the application process is also considered a criminal offense and, if you start the job and your cheating comes to light, can result in direct termination.

The only good way to influence your test score is to prepare extensively. Test The Talent offers several test packages to help you prepare for your SHL test.

Many well-known companies integrate SHL testing into their candidate search. It offers them a simplification of the application process and provides insights into the cognitive abilities of potential candidates. Companies that use SHL-Test are for example Maersk, Aldi, Deutsche Bank, KPMG, EY, McKinsey or PUMA. Especially large companies, as well as companies filling management positions, use skills tests to better assess their candidates.

The SHL test is offered in different languages. However, it makes sense to practice the test in the language in which you have the final test. It is of great advantage for you to take the test in English if this is your native language. It will be easier for you to answer the questions, especially in the verbal section.

How much an SHL test and your score matter in your application process varies from company to company. It also makes a difference for which position you are applying. Especially in management positions there is a focus on increased analytical, verbal and logical skills. The company you are applying to is more likely to want to find out which of the potential candidates stands out. Who has the greatest ability in which area, and who shows weakness where. If you achieve a score of 70%, you generally have a good chance of advancing in the application process, but it is not a guarantee. Nevertheless, if you achieve a score above the average, you will certainly impress the company. So prepare yourself extensively and get one step closer to your dream job.

Early preparation is always good and, as we all know, the earlier the better. If you know well in advance that you will have to take an SHL test, it is worthwhile to start preparing right away. You can find various practice test packages here at Test The Talent. If you start early, you will also have the opportunity to repeat and reapply what you have learned many times. This creates routine and confidence, which in turn will ensure a better result.

Sometimes there is hardly any time between the notice and the actual test day – but don’t panic. The most important thing now is to stay calm and familiarize yourself with all three test areas. Find out which area is your strength and which is your weakness through a first attempt and then set your learning focus.

Why do companies use SHL tests?

The race for the most attractive job positions on the labor market is fierce and competition is intense. It is important for companies to hire only the best candidates. That’s why consulting firms and other large companies have been using aptitude tests to better evaluate their candidates for decades.

A SHL test allows companies to effectively assess your logical thinking skills, as well as your ability to learn and apply new things. Your score shows how quickly you can understand and overview complex issues or new information.

The test consists of a verbal, a numerical and a logical part. For the numerical and the logical part, consisting of 18 questions, you have 24 minutes each. The verbal test consists of 30 questions, which you have 20 minutes to answer.

Below you can see sample questions of the three SHL test parts. On the left side you will see a data set. Based on this, you will then be asked three questions, which you must answer within a certain time limit.

Companies that use SHL tests to assess their applicants include Ernst & Young, Deutsche Bank, Daimler AG, Lidl, Bayer and Puma.

What is a SHL-Test?

SHL tests provide a framework for tests offered by the CEB / SHL company. Whether your upcoming test is called CEB, SHL, or something else, the types of tests are the same. At Test The Talent, we use the term SHL test across the board. SHL tests provide your potential employer with insight into your ability to learn and draw logical conclusions. Additionally, the test score indicates how quickly you are able to understand and apply new knowledge and complex relationships.

There are three different SHL test variations: numerical tests, verbal reasoning tests, and logic tests. Numerical tests put your computational skills to the test. You are shown a data set or graph for which you answer mathematical/statistical questions. In verbal tests, you read a text, try to understand it, and then answer questions about the content. Logic tests test your ability to think logically, testing your ability to understand and apply new things.

How to prepare?

Start preparing by trying to understand the structure of the test. Also, familiarize yourself with the time limit and the allowed aids. In addition, we recommend that you take time to review common types of arithmetic before beginning the test. For example, recall things like percentages or the rule of three.

Practice makes perfect! If you prepare systematically for SHL tests, you will be able to solve the tasks faster and faster over time and with a lower error rate. You will also learn the logic behind the questions and where there are hidden traps. In our experience, our test users improve over time by up to 70-80% compared to the first test.
